About Dana Carlson – Family Business Planning

I work with family business owners who want to transition well — preserving both the business and the relationships that matter most. My role is to guide you through the conversations, decisions, and documents that turn “we should plan” into “we have a plan we trust.”

No Pressure | No Jargon | No One-Size-Fits-All Solutions

Why I care about family businesses

I’ve spent my career years working with and for privately held and family-owned companies. Again and again, I’ve seen what happens when there’s no plan: good families divided by conflict, strong
companies weakened by unclear leadership, and owners who carry the weight of uncertainty far longer than is necessary.

I also know what’s possible when families take the time to talk, to listen, and to plan. My work is about creating that space and providing a framework so you’re not trying to figure it out alone.

How I approach this work

Family first, business always. The business exists to serve the family’s goals and values, not the other way around.

Clarity over complexity. Technical structures matter, but they should be understandable and explainable around the dinner table.

Conversation before documents. The best legal and tax plans come out of honest, facilitated conversations — not just forms and formulas.

Process, not pressure. We move at a deliberate pace that respects the gravity of the decisions, without letting things stall indefinitely.

Experience and qualifications

This work matters deeply to me because it shapes not just balance sheets, but family stories. If you’re carrying the weight of “we need a plan” on your shoulders, you don’t have to carry it alone.
